月の気配 — The Presence of the Moon

A joint project of τCosmos Technologies and Mieko Noguchi. Working with the glass artist, authentic lunar-regolith simulant — the MLM series developed in Project ReSources — is transmuted into glass art, sealing the presence of the Moon inside finite matter. Exhibited with B-OWND (Tanseisha Co., Ltd.).

Mieko Noguchi

Mieko Noguchi began working with glass in 1989 at the Glass Study Group of Musashino Art University, and graduated in 1991 from the Ceramics Major, Department of Craft Design, Junior College of Musashino Art University. In 2004 she founded the blown-glass studio FUSION FACTORY in Fujisawa, Kanagawa, and since 2023 has established a new studio in Kanagawa, developing her practice under the name "MIEKO NOGUCHI."

Noguchi expresses the supernatural, mysterious presence dwelling within all things of this world through glass — a material that transforms freely. Drawing on motifs such as the cosmos, Mount Fuji, waterfalls, and the waves painted by Katsushika Hokusai, she captures the expanse of a world beyond human understanding from a sweeping, bird's-eye perspective. By condensing magnificent landscapes and energy within transparent glass, she raises an infinite cosmic vision and spirituality inside finite matter, evoking in the viewer the fundamental connection between nature and the cosmos.

Green Born from Moon Sand

Lunar sand — "regolith" — is generally regarded as gray. Yet through this work an unexpected expression emerged: a vivid, jade-like green, unimaginable from regolith's inorganic appearance, was born within the glass. Even on a lunar surface without the shadow of a single living thing, one may long to gaze upon green — and for the heart of such a "person living on the Moon," glass art may become a source of solace.

Waves of the Moon

The regolith simulant used here models samples from the regions known as the lunar maria — the "seas" of the Moon. Though regolith gives a dry impression, its fusion with glass produced a lustrous, vivid texture. Seen under the microscope, this is where the waves of the Moon appear. Do try to find which work it belongs to.

Celestial Body & Fragments within the Glass

In a work expressing the lunar surface inside glass, a precious moment was, by chance, recreated during production — a "meteorite impact." The great Moon floating within the glass appears as though it had just collided with some large celestial body: a work that seems to capture a precious instant.

Development of MLM-01 Regolith Simulant

Engineering high-fidelity lunar mare regolith simulants — the MLM series — reproducing the composition and texture of the Moon's basaltic plains so its surface environment can be studied and simulated on Earth. Developed through joint research with Marucho Co., Ltd.; MLM-01–06 also provide the material transformed into glass art in Project Alchemist.
